Carers
I currently work across 4 residential care environments offering a range of psychological services. I believe strongly in the importance of empowering carers to create a therapeutically informed environment for all young people in their care and that through the process of offering containment to carers they become more equipped to understand and support the young people they look after.
I offer the following services:
Consultation – understanding our young people
I have many years of experience offering consultation to parents / carers and wider systems in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Supporting the system as a whole to gain a broader shared understanding of a young person’s needs based on exploration of their early experiences and presenting behaviours, allows the system to respond more effectively to the young people in their care. We may focus on a young person new to the care environment, we may focus on a particular problem or challenge. The aim is to work collaboratively to increase our understanding and make plans for ongoing care.
Consultation – understanding our organization
I can also offer consultation to consider the broader psychological needs of your organization as a whole. One example of this is my recent involvement with an organization supporting them to develop a framework to inform their therapeutic culture. I have also been involved with another organization supporting them to consider their policy documentation from a trauma-informed psychological perspective
Training
I offer both formal training and informal small-group workshops in the following areas:
Clinical Supervision / Reflective Practice
In my opinion, Clinical supervision is essential for the psychological wellbeing of adults supporting young people with complex needs. Clinical supervision offers a space to reflect on the needs of the young person but also the needs of the adult, developing a broader understanding of the complex dynamics at play and acknowledging the importance of their own experiences of care to inform their practice. Good clinical supervision can reduce adult burn-out, support retention and sustain commitment
Reflective Practice provides an opportunity for a group of carers or a multi-disciplinary team to reflect together on their role within the network of care they offer. This enables groups to consider what they are proud of and what is going well alongside challenges and collaboratively exploring how to overcome these.
I am happy to discuss the specific needs of your organisation to identify if I can be of assistance.
